Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team (CVSRT) tribute - Mr Robert (Bob) Uttley M.B.E, CVSRT Lifetime Vice President, 20th November 1933 to 27th March 2022

Mr Robert (Bob) Uttley M.B.E, CVSRT Lifetime Vice President, sadly passed away on Sunday 27th March 2022, our thoughts are with Bob’s family, daughter Andrea and friends.

In a celebration of his life, we would like to share some memories of Bob who will be remembered for being an inspiration to others, a true gentleman and someone who was dedicated to everything he was passionate about.

Bob’s career saw him spend many years as a chartered accountant and financial director, whilst throughout this time he was also a stalwart supporter of the local community with strong connections to various organisations in Todmorden including the Choral Society and St Mary’s Church Choir.  Bob was a keen Walsden and Todmorden cricket follower and was also captain of Todmorden Golf club in 1973, club president in the early 1990s and grounds officer between 1974-1987.

His connection with CVSRT was borne out of tragedy when his son Robert died whilst climbing Annapurna III in the Himalayas during a whiteout in October 1983.

In 1994 Bob was made honorary president and continued in the position until 2018, after which he was elected life vice-president.

Shortly after Bob became president, out of necessity, the team decided to vacate its rented premises in Hebden Bridge and build a new base of operations (RP90 The Rescue Post).  Having secured a plot in Mytholmroyd, fund raising started in earnest and Bob worked tirelessly to ensure that the funds required, almost £100,000, were raised.  Throughout the building of the Rescue Post, Bob always knew a person, a business or a source of funding for everything needed.   The Rescue Post, which is still our base today, was built and the team re-located in the summer of 1995 and officially opened on 15th June 1996.

In 2006 Bob represented the team at a Buckingham Palace Garden party hosted by Her Majesty the Queen for her 80th birthday.

Bob oversaw several other projects during his tenure and he always applied himself to generating support for these.  Shortly before he stood down as President in 2018 the team acquired a new control vehicle, which carries Bob’s name along with the message “In recognition of his service to the team”.

A memorable moment occurred on the 17th of June 2017 as Bob was named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List and awarded the M.B.E. for services to the community in Calder Valley and Todmorden.

Further awards came in 2018 when Bob was presented with the Mountain Rescue England & Wales (MREW) Long Service Certificate.  At this time, he was also offered the role of Lifetime Vice President by the Team which Bob gratefully accepted.

Throughout his life Bob was a dependable supporter, ambassador, mentor and friend to the team and truly left a positive imprint on both the Team and the wider Calder Valley and his presence will be sadly missed.

The funeral will be held at St. Mary's Church, Todmorden, OL14-7BD on Monday 25th April at 13:30hrs.

From all at CVSRT, thank you for everything Bob and may you Rest in Peace.
