This last week was Volunteers’ Week, which celebrated the contribution millions of volunteers make every single day across the UK. It takes place every year from 1st – 7th June and is organised by The National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) in partnership with Volunteer Development Scotland, Volunteer Now (Northern Ireland) and Wales Council for Voluntary Action. CVSRT vs Calderdale Way Relay

On Sunday (21st May), CVSRT provided safety cover for the annual Calderdale Way Relay, which is organised by Halifax Harriers AC and is generally attended by over 1000 club runners from across the country. At 09:15, team members were called to assist a runner who had fallen and sustained a dislocated shoulder. (See Incident 1014). The runner received pain relief whilst his injury was dealt with. CVSRT receive new harnesses from Partnership Funding Team

Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team are the latest group in the District to benefit from money returned under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA). The district’s Partnership Funding Team bought 10 specialist harnesses using money seized from criminals. The harnesses were presented to the Equipment Officer Richard Smith and Deputy Team Leader Jonathan Cole from CVRST at Halifax Police Station. In memory of Will Sutcliffe

Last week, CVSRT welcomed relatives of founder team member Will Sutcliffe to The Rescue Post.  Will was a well respected member of the team and sadly passed away recently. He always followed the team with interest and often attended business meetings and our AGM. One of his two daughters, Hazel Stobbs, and his grand daughter Rosie attended our base last Tuesday to present the team with the proceeds of a collection from his funeral (almost £500).  In addition to this, Rosie recently came third in a National Bouldering Competition in Reading, and has donated her prize of a £20.00 DMM…

Core Skills Training Day 2017

Specialist training for the Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team is a weekly requirement to maintain the essential skills needed to operate safely as an effective emergency response service. Whilst we are all volunteers, team members are highly trained to guidelines set by Mountain Rescue England & Wales (MREW). Following an information evening attended by 25 people on 17th January, 12 arrived on Saturday for a hill assessment in the hope of gaining a place as one of this year's trainee members. This weekend saw our current Probationary Members (2016-17) take their final assessment - a non-stop 24hr test of attitude, aptitude and ability – the perfect opportunity for our five ‘probies’ to demonstrate what they have learnt. CVSRT receive £1000 donation from Halifax Freemasons (De Warren Lodge)

On Monday evening, CVSRT had a visit to The Rescue Post from members of the Halifax Freemasons (De Warren Lodge) who enjoyed a slideshow presentation and talk about the team, followed by a demonstration of rescue equipment we use. De Warren Lodge member David Whitteron, thanked the team for a charming evening and presented CVSRT Deputy Leader, Jonathan Cole with a donation of £1000, which was gratefully accepted on behalf of CVSRT. After the visit, team members and their guests retired to the Shoulder of Mutton in Mytholmroyd for refreshments.

CVSRT Jonothan Wright takes 3rd place on Montane Spine Race Mountain Rescue Challenge

We are delighted to announce that CVSRT member Jonothan Wright completed the Montane Spine Race Mountain Rescue Challenge in 3rd place, finishing in 36hrs 38mins 36secs. What a fantastic result and incredible achievement – Very well done. Commiserations to CVSRT member, Howard Barton, who retired at Gargrave due to a leg injury sustained near East Marton. Vocation Brewery donate £805.00 to CVSRT

Earlier in 2016, Vocation Brewery kindly launched a limited cask ale called ‘Search & Rescue’ to mark our 50th Anniversary and to help fundraise for the team. Yesterday, the team gratefully received a cheque for £805.00 from sales of the ale. Many thanks to John Hickling and the Vocation Brewery staff for their fantastic support. CVSRT invest £13,000 improving flood water rescue capability

With the sounds of the flood sirens heard recently in the Calder Valley, we are all constantly reminded of the risk of flooding remains real. CVSRT remains vigilant, always prepared ready to deploy when and wherever needed. On Tuesday evening, CVSRT had a visit from Chris Kilburn from Whoosh Mountain Biking based in Hebden Bridge, who contacted us saying he’d like call in to our base in Mytholmroyd with a donation for the team. Keeping on the road

One of the biggest expenditures for the team is maintaining our fleet of four vehicles so they are ready to deploy at a moments notice. Calder Mobile 1 & 4 are stationed in the centre of the Calder Valley at our main base in Mytholmroyd. Calder Mobile 3 is based at Copley in the Lower Valley and Calder Mobile 2 is based at Todmorden in the Upper Valley. These strategic locations enables us to provide a rapid emergency response anywhere within our operational area. All our vehicles have an active service life span of about 15 years (where possible). Those of you who follow the incidents we are called to are well aware of the essential service the Yorkshire Air Ambulance provides for the Yorkshire community, and in most cases they are the casualty’s only hope of reaching hospital quickly to receive the urgent medical assistance they require. On Wednesday 5th October, Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team members welcomed a local family to The Rescue Post, who had been in touch wishing to make a donation of £465. This generous amount was part of a £930.00 collection raised at the funeral of Michael Boyle of Elland, who sadly died on 8th September 2016, aged 73. £465 was also kindly donated to the RNLI by the family. Sir Fred Hoyle rescued by CVSRT

To mark our 50th Anniversary, we’ve collated a selection of notable incidents from over the 50 years which have been published in a limited edition booklet. One such incident was the search and rescue of Sir Fred Hoyle on 24th November 1997, who went missing whilst out walking near his childhood home at Eldwick, Bingley.
