£60,000 donation from Community Foundation For Calderdale

02 Dec 2016
WOW! Something happened last night in Halifax and the shockwaves are still being felt today within Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team. Yesterday evening, CVSRT Leader Ben Carter, Deputy Leader Jonathan Cole and Chairman Pete Farnell attended an event at Dean Clough Halifax with 250 guests to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Community Foundation For Calderdale, but little did they know what was about to happen. For those unfamiliar with the work CFFC does, they are a philanthropic advisor to individual donors and businesses locally, a strategic grant making foundation and community leader. Each year they identify priority local…

On Tuesday evening, CVSRT had a visit from Chris Kilburn from Whoosh Mountain Biking based in Hebden Bridge, who contacted us saying he’d like call in to our base in Mytholmroyd with a donation for the team. As a mountain bike guide and instructor, Chris explained that he had recently organised a Mountain Bike Skills Course, and all the riders decided the course fee would be donated to charity and CVSRT was their chosen recipient. Chris said, “We all love riding our biking on the trails around the area, and some the routes can be quite technical. At Whoosh, I…

Keeping on the road

22 Oct 2016
One of the biggest expenditures for the team is maintaining our fleet of four vehicles so they are ready to deploy at a moments notice. Calder Mobile 1 & 4 are stationed in the centre of the Calder Valley at our main base in Mytholmroyd. Calder Mobile 3 is based at Copley in the Lower Valley and Calder Mobile 2 is based at Todmorden in the Upper Valley. These strategic locations enables us to provide a rapid emergency response anywhere within our operational area. All our vehicles have an active service life span of about 15 years (where possible). This…

Helicopter ER

16 Oct 2016
Those of you who follow the incidents we are called to are well aware of the essential service the Yorkshire Air Ambulance provides for the Yorkshire community, and in most cases they are the casualty’s only hope of reaching hospital quickly to receive the urgent medical assistance they require. This week, several CVSRT members gave up their spare time to assist Ascent Productions with filming several scenes for the new series of Helicopter ER, which follows the work of our friends at the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. So far this year, CVSRT has attended 62 incidents, of which…

Sir Fred was a famous physicist and arguably the most important astronomer of the last century, after Albert Einstein. Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team were called to assist with the search for Sir Fred who had been missing for over 10hrs. He was eventually…

Early Rescue Stretchers

31 May 2016
A dramatic photograph from the teams archive showing CVSRT member Clive Green demonstrating the NOSSAC stretcher and a Whillans harness at Heptonstall Quarry in 1974. The NOSSAC was named after Don Casson (deceased) who was a team leader in the early days. Don set up a training exercise at Blackstone Edge where he placed himself in one of the narrow "crevasse" holes at the top of the crag. He was a big bloke and the team couldn't get him out! The NOSSAC stretcher was developed to extract casualties from inaccessible places that couldn't be reached with a conventional stretcher. Sadly…

Commemorative Walk

04 May 2016
On Saturday 30th April 2016, Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team members, ex team members, supporters, families and friends gathered for a commemorative walk as part of the 50th Anniversary year. The walk was particularly significant because it reflected part of the ill-fated route taken on the 29th November 1965 by Robert Akrigg, the reservoir keeper who set out in blizzard conditions with his son Donald, to check rain gauges in the catchment area. Parting company at the junction between Reaps Water and Dicken Dyke, Robert set off towards Raistrick Greave. Donald returned to the rendezvous having completing his tasks,…
