Commemorative Walk

04 May 2016
On Saturday 30th April 2016, Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team members, ex team members, supporters, families and friends gathered for a commemorative walk as part of the 50th Anniversary year. The walk was particularly significant because it reflected part of the ill-fated route taken on the 29th November 1965 by Robert Akrigg, the reservoir keeper who set out in blizzard conditions with his son Donald, to check rain gauges in the catchment area. Parting company at the junction between Reaps Water and Dicken Dyke, Robert set off towards Raistrick Greave. Donald returned to the rendezvous having completing his tasks,…

Pastures new for Mobile 3

12 Apr 2016
CVSRT made the decision late last year to replace one of our Land rovers with a new vehicle, after much deliberation a Toyota Hilux Pickup was chosen and that new vehicle joined our fleet in early February. The Land Rover still has plenty of life in it though and following a tradition within Mountain Rescue of passing on vehicles to other teams, CVSRT put out the word that a vehicle would soon be available. Avon and Somerset S&R Team contacted us with a view to taking the vehicle as one of theirs is very soon to be taken off the…

Last month, Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team were kindly invited to attend a cheque presentation at the Rochdale Masonic Lodge, along with fellow Mountain Rescue Team representatives from Oldham, Rossendale & Pendle, Bolton and Bowland. The very generous donation was in recognition of the MRTs voluntary services and assistance provided to the emergency service and local communities during the recent devastating floods that hit the region and surrounding areas. Provincial Grand Master Alex McLaran presented the regional mountain rescue team with a cheque for £2,500 per team - that’s an incredible grand total of £12,500.00 donation. CVSRT members, Steve…

06 Mar 2016
On Saturday, CVSRT spent the day at the Castle Carr Estate focusing on Core Skills Training. During the morning session, members were divided into groups and worked through five skill stations including; casualty care, timed stretcher circuits, rope system evacuation, search techniques and water rescue safety. In the afternoon, teams put these core skills to good use and were deployed to various search and rescue incident scenarios within the estate.  CVSRT would like to thank a few people who made all this possible. Over forty Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team members and supporters gathered this week at The Rescue Post in Mytholmroyd to raise a glass to remember the formation of the rescue team which occurred 50 years ago. During the evening, CVSRT President Bob Uttley read the original minutes from the very first meeting held on 15th February 1966, before cutting the 50th Anniversary cake. The informal celebration marked the official start of the teams Golden Jubilee year. To help celebrate this monumental milestone, a series of special events have been planned. There will be something for everyone, so we hope…

New Vehicle

05 Feb 2016
As we begin to celebrate the teams 50th Anniversary year, it seems perfect timing to introduce the newest addition to the Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team family. You may remember last year that the team began the process of fundraising and researching a suitable replacement for our aging Land Rover Defender 110 - Calder Mobile 3. After much consideration, research and talking to fellow Mountain Rescue teams, the team made the informed decision to purchase a Double Cab Pick-up. CVSRT can now welcome our new custom-built Toyota Hilux Mountain Rescue Ambulance. It will join our fleet of emergency response…

The Best Weekend Since the Invention of Toast by Richard Quinn On 22nd - 23rd January 2016, our six Probationary Members (2015-16) were put through their paces over a 24-hour period. This was to assess whether they met the required standards to join the team as full team members. Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team are delighted to report that all passed the assessment and did themselves proud. Here’s what took place…from the Probies perspective. ------- You know that feeling when you go for a drive with some mates on a Friday night and then they dump you at an…

31 Jan 2016
At our AGM last week, CVSRT & SARDA member Ellie Sherwin was awarded with her 25 years Long Service Award with Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team.  What an excellent achievement and incredible commitment.  Well done Ellie, from all at CVSRT.  (pictured here with Search Dog Pepper). Ellie has kindly written a synopsis of her time with the team so far… “I have always been an outdoor person and over 25 years ago I was acting as a “body” for the search and rescue dogs.  At this point I decided I would like to be more involved in the nitty gritty…

Community Clean Up

31 Jan 2016
On Saturday, CVSRT were out and about helping to clean-up a steep section of wooded gully on the Calderdale border at Blackshaw Beck between Fairfields Avenue and Halifax Road in Shelf. The aim of this was to clear litter, fly-tipping and debris that had built up over many years and was becoming an eyesore in the area. Our team of enthusiastic volunteers and supporters donned heavy-duty gloves and old clothes to extract the ‘hard to reach’ rubbish for the Council to dispose of. Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team are very proud of our links with the local community and…

New tow bar donated by MUD UK

30 Jan 2016
Many thanks are in order for long-term supporter of the team, Kevin Baldwin at MUD UK for kindly donating and fitting the new tow bar on Calder Mobile 2 (Land Rover Defender 110).  Kevin heard that we were considering purchasing a trailer to transport water rescue equipment and he offered to supply and fit the tow bar for free. He has also recently supplied 2 LED blue light repeaters for Calder Mobile 1. Great support. Thanks from CVSRT.  Meanwhile, elsewhere in the news, it was great to see our fellow Mountain Rescue team members from Glossop MRT on BBC One: The One…

Les accepted the award and said, “Being part of a…

27 Jan 2016
CVSRT are extremely happy to announce that the team has received a very generous donation of £5000 from SSP, a leading insurance software provider, whose head office is based at Dean Clough Mill, Halifax. This substantial sum is part of an incredible £20,000 going towards efforts to help local people and businesses affected by the recent Boxing Day floods in Calderdale. Many SSP employees have been directly impacted by the recent floods, and Mr Laurence Walker, Chief Executive at SSP, was keen to find ways to support them and other local people as well as local businesses. “When a local tragedy like…

Javed Bhatti

22 Jan 2016
By now, most of you will be familiar with the recent Spine Challenger event and the inaugural Spine Mountain Rescue Challenge which covered 108miles from Edale to Hawes. Then there was the ‘Spine Race’ – dubbed Britain’s most brutal race, which encompassed the entire 268miles of The Pennine Way…but it doesn’t stop there! One of the Spine Race competitors, a gent called Javed Bhatti, completed the epic winter ultra-marathon, finishing the route in 7-days at Kirk Yetholm on Saturday morning. But after a short rest, he’s turned around and began the journey back along the Pennine Way to Edale… an…

CVSRT Steve Westwood completes SPINE Mountain Rescue Challenge 2016

11 Jan 2016
That's one happy and relieved chap. CVSRT Steve Westwood, presented with his Spine Mountain Rescue Challenge 2016 finishers t-shirt. Thank you to everyone who has supported our four runners this weekend at home, on social media or meeting them along the way at checkpoints or road crossing to top up with water, jelly babies or moral support. It's been an incredible challenge with brutal weather, unforgiving conditions and sleep deprivation.  There is obvious disappointment for Alistair, Howard and Tim who unfortunately had to retire at Checkpoint 1 (50 miles) due to injury, and jubilation for Steve who managed to complete the…

2015 in Summary

31 Dec 2015
During 2015, Calder Valley Search & Rescue Team has experienced some incredible high points, but sadly we finish the year witnessing first-hand the utter devastation that has ruined so many homes and businesses with the recent floods. No matter what the situation though, one word resonates throughout… ‘COMMUNITY’…and we are proud to be part of this community. On behalf of all the volunteers who make up the team; from supporters, dogsbodies and training casualties, probie members and operational full team members, may we take this opportunity to thank you all for your support over the last twelve months, because without…

Get Carl the Snail #Home4Xmas

21 Dec 2015
As some of you may remember, Calder Valley Search & Rescue Team were recently deployed to Cumbria to assist emergency services during the terrible flooding that hit the region at the beginning of December. Whilst evacuating local residents from the streets of Carlisle, our swiftwater rescue team spotted a very special character floating by.  He was saved and affectionately named ‘Carl’ before becoming the mascot for the rescue boat.  He remained with the boat and returned to the CVSRT base at the end of our deployment.  Now the floodwaters have receded, Carl wants to return home.  He was found floating along Petterell Street,…
