#Callouts 2021

15 Aug 2021
#Callouts 2021   It has been another busy year for Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team (CVSRT) with 72 callouts so far in 2021.   While we like to share our involvement when supporting the statutory emergency services, in particular West Yorkshire Police (WYP) and Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS), there are occasions where, due the sensitivity of the incident, we feel it is better not to share to on our social media pages.    As such it may have seemed CVSRT have been less busy recently. We are indeed as busy as ever and as always we are on call…

Team Training   Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team (CVSRT) were in Heptonstall on Tuesday evening for some group training, only the 2nd full team training session held since the start of the pandemic.  The training covered casualty immobilisation and packaging when dealing with potential neck, back, hip and upper leg injuries.     Joining the team throughout the evening was MP for Halifax, Holly Lynch.  Holly has agreed to represent Mountain Rescue England and Wales (MREW) at a national level, in Parliament, and re-establish the All Party Parliamentary Group.   As always a big thank you to our support…

New Recruits

04 Aug 2021
New Recruits   All new aspirant Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team (CVSRT) candidates are required to go through our three-stage selection process.  This includes submitting an initial application form, attending an open evening and finally a 10 hour long hill skills assessment. Community Support

Community Support   CVSRT are delighted to have been chosen by this year’s captains at Bradley Hall Golf Club as their charity of the year.    The club’s first fundraising event for the team held on the 2nd July 2021 was a 9-hole competition, with each hole featuring food and drink from different countries.    All those in attendance took the opportunity to sample the delights of food from countries including Mexico and Jamaica, and also had the opportunity to meet two grateful club members who had been rescued by the team in the last 18 months.   Thank you…

#NationalMapReadingWeek

11 Jul 2021
#NationalMapReadingWeek   This week is National Map Reading Week which is aimed to help get you prepared for greater adventures this summer!   Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team along with Mountain Rescue England and Wales recommended when intending to go out in the hills, to be #adventuresmart.    Ask yourself 3 questions before you set off: 1. Do I know what the weather will be like? 2. Do I have the right gear? 3. Do I have the knowledge & skills for the day?   The technology available today is fantastic, but it can fail us by locking up,…

Community Clean Up

07 Jul 2021
Community Clean Up   On the morning of Saturday 26th June a group of Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team (CVSRT) supporters, with a little help from some of our operational members, made a visit to Shelf, working with Calderdale Council to clear an area that had unfortunately become littered with rubbish.   Over the space of four hours a large amount of rubbish was collected and cleared with safety measures in place when working on steep ground.     The difference made to area was amazing.    CVSRT supporters regularly give their free time to help out, not only our…

CVSRT New Team Members

22 Jun 2021
CVSRT New Team Members   As a result of the COVID-19 restrictions our new member intake assessment for 2021 unfortunately had to be delayed from its usual timing of January and will now take place in the early hours of 3rd July.    Whilst the event will have a different feel this year with it being held in the height of summer instead of our typical winter schedule, we will still put all applicants through their paces on the hill - testing their navigation throughout the day and night, team work skills, ability to maintain a positive attitude and checking…

#Volunteersweek

04 Jun 2021
#Volunteersweek   This week is volunteers’ week, an annual celebration of the contribution millions of people make across the UK through volunteering.    Everyone at Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team (CVSRT) commits to hundreds of hours of volunteer time per year for the team, however, we are so much more than the members you see out on the hills.     We have several supporters who regularly give up their time to support training and fundraising events, often lay hiding in the cold wet moors acting as a training casualty and working behind the scenes to enable the team…

#CalderdaleBoundaryRun

27 May 2021
#CalderdaleBoundaryRun   What do you do when national restrictions prevent you from completing events you’ve trained for?     If you’re Jonothan Wright, one of Calder Valley Search and rescue Team’s (CVSRT) operational members, then you hatch a plan to run the entire Calderdale boundary.  Nonstop!   An incredible achievement by Jonothan who has shared a few words outlining his feat.    ______   Earlier this year, I was due to run in the 108-mile Montane Spine Mountain Rescue Team Challenge to raise funds for my local team, Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team. 23 Mar 2021
Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team tribute - Neville Sharp BEM 1943 - 2021  Neville Sharp BEM sadly passed away on 12th March 2021. Our thoughts are with Nev's wife, Lynn, 2 daughters, 3 grandchildren, extended family and all of his friends.  In a celebration of his life, we would like to share some stories and memories of someone who will be remembered for being an inspiration to others, a man full of enthusiasm and dedicated to everything he was passionate for. RIP Nev Sharp

13 Mar 2021
All at CVSRT were saddened this week to hear the news that a dear friend of the team Nev Sharp BEM has passed away.   Many of our current team worked alongside Nev who had connections to the team since its inception and was our team leader for more than ten years.     Everyone who knew him described him as a great man who made a huge impact, both locally and nationally, in the many years he worked with MREW and MRSDE.   We will look to pay our tributes over the coming weeks to celebrate his life, whilst…

Now is not the time to be venturing beyond 'local'

17 Feb 2021
Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team would like to remind our local community to please adhere to the Government lockdown restrictions and only exercise locally to your home. Now is not the time to be venturing into the more remote parts of our countryside and potentially putting yourself in harm’s way. Granted, accidents can happen to anyone, at any time, in any location (even close to home). By definition, an accident is an unfortunate incident that happens unexpectedly and unintentionally, typically resulting in damage or injury. If an accident happened to you in a remote, inaccessible location, would you know…

Congratulations Laura

05 Feb 2021
#Congratulations Laura   In a normal year, members of Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team (CVSRT) gather on the last Tuesday in January to discuss business.  On the agenda for this meeting is the formality of welcoming all of our successful probationary (probie) members to the team as fully fledged operational members.    #Congratulations Laura    However, for everyone throughout the Calder Valley and beyond, the past year has been anything but normal. For our newest team member Laura, our only 2020 new recruit, her journey into the team followed this pattern and was very different than expected.    Laura…

Essential Training

05 Jan 2021
Throughout the COVID19 pandemic including the previous lockdown’s, Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team (CVSRT) has had the safety of our team members, casualties in our care and the wider community at the centre of how we operate.  Like many other organisations, since March 2020 we have had to cancel events, adapt to new procedures, and moved the majority of our training online. In addition to the steps already taken as a result of previous lockdowns and restrictions, we are, along with our local community and the rest of the country, also looking at how best to adapt to the…

What A Year

02 Jan 2021
#2020WhatAYear   Callouts Assisting the emergency services when our assistance is required is the reason Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team (CVSRT) exists and 2020 was a busy year. There were 96 full team callouts in total, with our first of the year on New Year’s Day.  2020 also saw the busiest single day since CVSRT was formed with the team out on 4 separate incidents over a 12-hour period.   COVID-19 The global pandemic is something that has had a huge impact on all of us. As a team we had to adapt quickly and make significant changes to the…

Search Dogs

31 Oct 2020
#SEARCH DOGS   During a cold and rainy weekend in February 2020, before the COVID19 restrictions were in place, a group of 3rd-year Digital Television Production students from Ravensbourne University, London joined Mountain Rescue Search Dogs England (MRSDE) dogs, handlers and dogsbodies from Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team (CVSRT) as they completed one of their regular training sessions at Widdop and Langfield. The result is a wonderful insight into how the dogs & handlers work whilst searching for a missing person.      CVSRT and our MRSDE dog handlers would like to thank all the students involved who took…
